Notice of Name Change
Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal will be changing its name to UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal, effective this upcoming fall. The name change coincides with the former UC Hastings College of the Law changing its name to the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (or UC Law SF for short).
Since 2017, the College has studied the actions of its founder, Serranus Hastings, and the harms he committed against the Round Valley Indian Tribes and Yuki People. As a result of the findings and numerous meetings with affected Indigenous People, alumni, students, staff, and faculty, in the fall of 2021, the College's Board of Directors voted to rename the school. In July 2022, the Board unanimously chose UC College of the Law, San Francisco as its new name. This was followed by a vote by the state Legislature that overwhelmingly approved Assembly Bill 1936 that changed the state Education Code to reflect the College's new name. On September 23, 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law and as of January 1, 2023, UC Hastings officially changed its name to UC Law SF.
The school will be phasing out the use of UC Law SF across our campus, including converting all external, internal, physical, and virtual instances of our name to UC Law SF during the next six months. During this transition, our law journal will continue to publish under its current name Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal for the remainder of the 2023 Spring term. The journal will transition to its new name UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal during the 2023-2024 academic year. For any submissions accepted for publication in the fall, they will be published under the new journal name.
We thank you for your continued support and contribution to our journal. For any questions about the new name, please contact our Associate Director of Scholarly Publications Jennifer Ta at tajennifer@uchastings.edu.
